国足迎来了美加墨世界杯预选赛的生死战，36强赛末轮客场挑战韩国，只要打平就能确保晋级18强。经过90分钟苦战，国足0-1不敌韩国，无缘提前出线，把主动权拱手相让。

由于第三轮被新加坡2-2逼平，第五轮在主场也没能拿下泰国，因此国足的悬念延续到最后一轮生死战。末轮打响之前，韩国队提前出线，新加坡提前出局，8分的国足和5分的泰国竞争出线资格。然而赛前很多因素是不利于国足的，首先这场比赛开球时间比泰国VS新加坡早了一个半小时，其次韩国队要争取18强赛一档，因此也要力争三分，而新加坡主帅因病缺席大有躺平意味。因此，国足只能靠自己。

首发方面，伊万科维奇终于放弃单后腰，摆出五后卫打防守反击。朱辰杰、蒋圣龙、蒋光太三中卫，左右两个边翼卫是刘洋和杨泽翔，中场是王上源、谢文能、徐皓阳，前面拜合拉木和费南多一高一快，门将是王大雷。韩国队孙兴慜、黄喜灿、李刚仁组成三叉戟，中场是李在城、郑优营、黄仁范，后防线从左到右是金珍珠、权敬源、曹侑珉、朴乘煜，门将是赵贤祐。

上半场比赛，国足的发挥近乎完美。虽然绝大多数时间被韩国队压着打，但所有人注意力都很集中，没有给韩国队太好的机会。尤其是孙兴慜拿球，基本都是两个人以上贴防，远征的中国球迷也很给力，三千人面对六万韩国球迷丝毫不虚，孙兴慜一度向着看台做3-0的手势。进攻端，拜合拉木和费南多多次被韩国队侵犯，为国足赢得定位球机会，蒋圣龙的头球偏出。上半场尾声，费南多传中被解围，刘洋抽射被封堵，这是国足距离进球最近的一次。半场，双方战成0-0。

下半场易边再战，双方在中场的绞杀明显更加激烈。第61分钟，韩国队刚换人就进球，一脚对角线长传找孙兴慜，孙兴慜横敲禁区乱战，李刚仁第二点劲射破门。落后之下国足面临抉择，要么保0-1的比分，把希望寄托在新加坡身上，要么冒着再丢一球的风险把阵型前提，伊万科维奇选择后者，他换上武磊张玉宁放手一搏。不过在体能下滑的情况下，国足仍然不敢完全压上，怕阵型脱节。最终，0-1的比分保持到终场哨响。
